Small Business – Is it an asset, liability or legacy?
Do you ever feel like your business is a liability, rather than one of your greatest assets?
This is something many business owners feel.
While they love it (mostly), at times they hate it. This feeling is caused by the huge amount of responsibility they feel to both clients & staff. Then there is their family who rely on the business in order for them to have food on the table & clothes on their backs.
So why do people go into business?
For some it may be a bit of ego about being able to say that they have their own business. For others it may be the dream that they don’t have to “answer” to anyone, and have the freedom of “being their own boss”.
In reality though, they actually have more people to answer to than if they did have a boss, but the difference being that as the business owner there is a whole lot more riding on it. Often there is so much heartache for quite often very little return.
So, what is the ‘entrepreneurial’ affliction that many people suffer?
For me personally, it’s about building something, a legacy that I’m proud to leave behind.
Now does that mean I need to build an empire? No, not necessarily, it could be that I have been able to employ & train people in a way that makes them an asset to our industry and the business world in general.
Alternatively it could be that the legacy I leave behind will be found inside each & everyone of the businesses & families affected by those that my team and I have helped get organised & a track.
What is my dream legacy? This would be a business that no longer needs me but that continues to serve the small business community at the highest level adding value to businesses and the people who own & work in them time after time.
Do you have a dream legacy? If you don’t have one, why are you doing what you do?
Are you the builder who employs a team of people or nurtures apprentices into awesome tradesmen and creates wonderful spaces and peace of mind for clients?
Or are you the health professional that has found a way to tap into the psychology around why people do what they do to their bodies and start with fixing that first to get great results?
Are you the engineer, architect or surveyor that helps people get started on their dream home or investment project.
If you don’t have a dream legacy, what do you think it is at the moment? Then if you had a magic wand what would it be?
Whatever it is, selfishly I’d love you to share it with me. I find people’s hopes and dreams totally inspirational. Let’s face it, it’s good to reflect on these things and have dreams to work towards, and to work out where to from here.
